residence time

The term 'residence time' as it applies to the area of the environment can be defined as 'The average time spent in a reservoir by an individual atom or molecule. With respect to greenhouse gases, residence time usually refers to how long a particular molecule remains in the atmosphere. See atmospheric lifetime.7'.

The term 'residence time' as it applies to the area of carbon dioxide can be defined as ' The size of any specific reservoir or pool of mass (e.g., carbon) divided by the total flux of mass into or out of that pool'.
